Ppg
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002894
An abbreviation for pounds per gallon, the standard unit of measurement for drilling fluid density, or mud weight, in the United States. Mud weight is a primary fluid property, controlled by adding weighting agents like barite or hematite to generate sufficient hydrostatic pressure to contain formation pressures. A typical freshwater mud has a density of 8.33 ppg, while weighted muds for deep, high-pressure wells can exceed 18 ppg.
