An abbreviation for parts per million, a unit of concentration used to express very small quantities of a substance within a larger mixture. In drilling fluids, it is often used to quantify the concentration of dissolved ions, contaminants, or certain chemical additives. One part per million is equivalent to one milligram per liter.
