Mud density

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002448

The mass per unit volume of a drilling fluid, also known as mud weight. It is the primary property used to control subsurface pressures, with the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the fluid column being a direct function of its density and vertical depth. Mud density is measured on the rig using a mud balance and is typically expressed in pounds per gallon (ppg), pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³), or specific gravity (SG).
