The fluid pressure at the bottom of a well, made up of the hydrostatic pressure of the fluid column plus any surface pressure held on the well and, while circulating, the friction pressure in the annulus. In conventional overbalanced drilling it is kept above formation pore pressure and below fracture pressure. In field units, hydrostatic pressure in psi equals mud weight in pounds per gallon times true vertical depth in feet times 0.052.
