An abbreviation for hydrofluoric acid, a highly corrosive acid used in well stimulation treatments to dissolve silicate minerals in reservoir rock. This acid reacts with clays and sands to enlarge pore spaces, improving the flow of oil and gas to the wellbore. Due to its hazardous nature, it is often used in combination with other acids and corrosion inhibitors.
