Mass balance

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006970

An accounting of mass for a defined system or control volume, stating that what enters equals what leaves plus any change in the amount stored inside. Applied to one element, it sums the element's mass across all compounds before and after reaction, which tests whether every reaction path has been identified. It is written as input = output + accumulation, with a generation term added for individual compounds that react.
