Hydrophile-lipophile balance system
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005481
A numerical scale used to classify surfactants based on their relative affinity for water (hydrophilic) versus oil (lipophilic). This system assigns a value, typically ranging from 0 to 20, to a surfactant, indicating its suitability for different emulsion types. Surfactants with lower values are more oil-soluble, while those with higher values are more water-soluble.
