Ointment

A semisolid pharmaceutical preparation intended for external application to the skin or mucous membranes. It consists of a medicated base, which serves as a vehicle for one or more active ingredients, that can be oleaginous, water-soluble, or an emulsion. Ointments are distinguished from creams by their higher oil content and occlusive properties, and from pastes by their lower concentration of suspended solids.
