High-pressure air injection
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001826
An enhanced oil recovery method that injects air into a deep, high-pressure reservoir that typically holds light oil, where oxygen reacts with part of the oil by low-temperature oxidation or combustion. The reaction consumes the oxygen and produces some heat and flue gas, mainly nitrogen and carbon dioxide, and the flue gas drives oil toward the producers. Because reservoir temperature and pressure are high, the oil can ignite spontaneously, as in the Red River formation of the Williston basin.
