In situ combustion

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001956

  1. An enhanced oil recovery process that involves igniting a portion of the heavy oil within the reservoir by injecting air or an oxygen-enriched gas. The resulting combustion front generates heat, which reduces the viscosity of the remaining oil and drives it towards production wells. This method can be applied in both dry and wet variations, depending on whether water is co-injected.

  2. An enhanced oil recovery process where a portion of the crude oil in the reservoir is ignited and burned underground. Air or oxygen is injected to sustain the combustion front, which generates heat and combustion gases. These products mobilize and drive the remaining oil toward production wells, particularly effective for heavy oil reservoirs.
