Low-solids mud

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002230

A drilling fluid formulated to contain a minimal concentration of drilled solids and commercial clays, relying instead on polymers to build viscosity and control fluid loss. By reducing the total solids content, these muds can increase the rate of penetration and minimize formation damage. A non-dispersed, low-solids mud contains less than 6% by volume of solids and less than 3% by volume of bentonite clay.
