Low yield clay
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002227
A type of clay, such as kaolinite or illite, that produces a relatively small amount of viscosity and gel strength when dispersed in water. These clays are less reactive than high-yield clays like bentonite and contribute less to the rheological properties of drilling fluids. They are often present as formation solids rather than intentionally added components.
A clay mineral, such as kaolinite or illite, that contributes minimally to the viscosity of a drilling fluid when hydrated. Unlike high-yield clays like bentonite, these clays have limited swelling capacity and surface area. They are often encountered as drilled cuttings and can accumulate in the mud system, requiring removal by solids control equipment.
