Dehydration
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000985
The removal of water from a drilling fluid system or from its components. This process can involve the physical separation of free water or the chemical removal of water molecules bound to clays or other solids. Excessive dehydration of bentonite clay by heat or chemical contaminants causes it to lose its swelling capacity and viscosity-building properties, a change measured by testing the fluid's water content according to API Recommended Practice 13B.
