An abbreviation for low solids, referring to a type of drilling fluid formulated to contain a minimal concentration of drilled solids and commercial clays. An LS mud system uses polymers for viscosity and fluid loss control instead of high concentrations of bentonite. A non-dispersed, low-solids mud is defined as containing less than 6% by volume of solids and less than 3% by volume of bentonite clay.
