Colloidal solids
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000755
Finely divided solids in a drilling fluid, such as hydrated bentonite, that are about 1 nanometer to 1 micrometer in size and too small to settle under gravity. They supply much of the viscosity, gel strength, and filter cake quality of a water-based mud. A retort measures total solids, not this fraction, so reactive colloidal clay is estimated with the methylene blue test instead.
