Bentonite equivalent
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000323
A way of reporting the methylene blue test, which gauges the reactive clay content of a water-based mud, as the pounds per barrel of bentonite that would adsorb the same amount of dye. Under API practice the value equals five times the milliliters of methylene blue solution used per milliliter of mud sample, and it assumes bentonite with a cation exchange capacity of about 70 meq per 100 g. Active drilled shale and added bentonite both raise it, so the figure does not separate them.
