Cation exchange capacity
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000592
The total capacity of a rock, particularly shales and clays, to adsorb exchangeable cations per unit mass. It quantifies the amount of negatively charged sites on clay minerals that can attract and hold positively charged ions from formation water. This property significantly influences the electrical conductivity of shaly sands and is measured in milliequivalents per 100 grams.
