Cation exchange capacity, a measure of the total number of exchangeable cations that a material, such as clay in drilling mud, can adsorb. It indicates the reactivity of clays with the drilling fluid and their potential to swell or disperse. CEC is expressed in milliequivalents per 100 grams (meq/100g).
