Base exchange
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000281
The reversible process where ions in a solution, such as drilling mud filtrate, are exchanged with ions adsorbed onto the surfaces of clay minerals within the formation. This phenomenon, also known as cation exchange, can significantly affect the electrical properties of shaly sands and influence log measurements, particularly resistivity. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) quantifies this property.
