Gyp mud
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001776
A type of water-based drilling fluid that uses gypsum (calcium sulfate) as a primary additive to control clay hydration and improve shale stability. The calcium ions from the gypsum exchange with sodium ions on clay surfaces, reducing swelling and dispersion. Gyp muds are typically used in formations containing reactive shales.
