Ion exchange

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002035

A reversible chemical process where ions from a solid material are exchanged with ions in a surrounding liquid phase. In drilling fluids, this phenomenon occurs when clay particles exchange ions with the mud filtrate, which can lead to clay swelling or dispersion. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) is a measure of a clay's ability to undergo this process.
