IO
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002034
An abbreviation for isomerized olefin, a synthetic base fluid for non-aqueous drilling fluids made by shifting the double bond of linear alpha olefins, usually C16 to C18, to internal positions. Because the product has no aromatics and low toxicity, it is accepted for offshore use in regions that restrict diesel and mineral oil. Unlike polyalphaolefin, which is built by oligomerizing alpha olefins, IO keeps the original carbon chain length and changes only the double bond position.
