Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003735
A type of non-aqueous drilling fluid, also known as synthetic-based mud (SBM), where the continuous phase is a synthetic organic liquid rather than mineral oil or water. These fluids combine the high performance of oil-based muds, such as excellent lubricity and shale inhibition, with a lower environmental impact and reduced toxicity to marine life. Common synthetic base fluids include esters, linear alpha-olefins (LAO), and internal olefins (IO), which are subject to different environmental regulations depending on the region of operation.
