Base oil

The continuous liquid phase of an oil-based drilling fluid, which can be diesel, mineral oil, synthetic oil, or vegetable oil. It provides the primary fluid volume and contributes to the lubricity and thermal stability of the mud system. The choice of base oil depends on environmental regulations, cost, and desired fluid properties.
