Ion exchange

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006080

A reversible chemical process in which ions from a solution are exchanged for ions of similar charge that are electrostatically bound to an insoluble solid matrix, known as an ion exchanger. This process is widely used for water softening, purification, and separation of ionic species. Ion exchange resins are common materials employed for this purpose.
