Hardness ion
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001791
A multivalent cation, primarily calcium (Ca2+) or magnesium (Mg2+), present in water that can negatively impact the performance of drilling fluid additives. These ions react with certain polymers and clays, leading to flocculation, increased viscosity, or precipitation. Hardness ions are often removed or sequestered using chelating agents or soda ash.
