Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000641
To form a stable, water-soluble complex with metal ions, typically calcium, magnesium, or iron, through a process called chelation. This chemical reaction involves a chelating agent, which is a molecule with multiple bonding sites that encircle and bind to the metal ion. Chelating agents are used in oilfield operations to prevent scale formation or to dissolve existing scale deposits.
