Chelating agent

A chemical compound that forms stable, water-soluble complexes with metal ions, preventing them from precipitating or reacting undesirably. In well completions, chelating agents are used in acidizing treatments to prevent the precipitation of iron compounds or to dissolve scale deposits. Common examples include EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and NTA (nitrilotriacetic acid).
