Chelating Agent

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-004708

1. Any of various compounds that combine with metals to form chelates and that include some used medically in the treatment of metal poisoning (as by lead).

2. Chemicals that bind to and remove ions from solutions. Many chelating agents function through the formation of coordination complexes with metals.

3. Organic chemical that forms two or more coordination bonds with a central metal ion. Heterocyclic rings are formed with the central metal ion as part of each ring. Chelating agents can change the properties of metal ions, help to transport metal ions, and prevent scale formation.
