Carbonate ion
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000547
A polyatomic anion, CO3^2-, present in drilling fluids, often resulting from the dissolution of carbonate formations or the degradation of organic additives. High concentrations can lead to increased fluid viscosity and gel strength, and can interfere with the performance of other fluid additives. It is removed by precipitation with calcium or barium compounds.
