Bicarbonate
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000333
An anion (HCO3-) present in drilling fluids, often introduced as sodium bicarbonate to treat calcium contamination. Bicarbonate ions react with dissolved calcium to form calcium carbonate, which is an insoluble precipitate. This process reduces the concentration of free calcium ions, which can otherwise cause flocculation and increase the viscosity of water-based muds.
