Sodium carbonate

A chemical compound, Na2CO3, commonly known as soda ash, added to water-based drilling fluids. Its primary function is to precipitate calcium ions, thereby reducing water hardness and preventing flocculation of clays. Sodium carbonate also acts as an alkalinity agent, increasing the pH of the fluid.
