Soda ash

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003487

The common name for sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), a chemical additive used in water-based drilling fluids to treat calcium contamination. It precipitates calcium ions, which can cause clay flocculation and increased fluid loss, as insoluble calcium carbonate. This treatment is performed on the makeup water or the active mud system to maintain desired rheological properties and is a standard procedure when drilling through cement or gypsum formations.
