Soft water

Water that contains low concentrations of dissolved mineral ions, particularly calcium and magnesium. It is preferred for mixing water-based drilling fluids because it minimizes adverse reactions with clay particles and other additives. Hard water requires treatment with chemicals like soda ash to remove these ions.
