Oilfield slang for fiber rope as opposed to steel wire rope, made of natural fiber such as manila hemp or synthetic fiber such as nylon or polyester. A crew uses it for light handling jobs, such as tying off equipment, and a manila line wrapped on the cathead pulls the tongs or spinning chain. Steel wire rope, such as the drilling line reeved through the blocks, is the contrasting material.
