Makeup cathead

A spool-shaped device mounted on the drawworks shaft, used to tighten threaded connections on the rig floor. A rope or chain is wrapped around the rotating cathead, and the other end is attached to makeup tongs to apply torque to the pipe. This system has been largely superseded by hydraulic power tongs and iron roughnecks due to safety concerns.
