Breakout cathead
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000451
A clutch-engaged spool on the catshaft of the drawworks, usually on the side opposite the driller, that uses drawworks power to pull a line attached to the breakout tongs. That pull applies the high torque needed to unscrew a drill pipe connection when pipe is racked back. It differs from the makeup cathead, which handles the tightening of connections.
