Makeup tongs

Large, wrench-like tools used on the rig floor to grip and rotate drill pipe, casing, or other tubulars to tighten a threaded connection. They are used in pairs, with one set acting as a backup to hold the lower section of pipe stationary while the other applies rotational force. The amount of force is controlled by a chain or cable connected to a cathead or hydraulic cylinder.
