Tongs
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003860
Large wrenches used by the rig crew to apply torque for making up or breaking out threaded connections on drill pipe, casing, and other tubulars. Manual tongs are operated with catlines from the drawworks, while hydraulic power tongs provide controlled, high-torque makeup for connections requiring precise specifications. The amount of torque applied is measured to confirm that the connection is properly tightened without being damaged.
