Roughneck

A member of the drilling crew who works on the rig floor under the supervision of the driller, performing the manual labor involved in drilling operations. Responsibilities include making and breaking connections as drill pipe is tripped in or out of the hole, maintaining drilling equipment, and assisting with general rig operations. A standard drilling crew includes several roughnecks, also known as floorhands, on each shift.
