Tool joint

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003861

A heavy, threaded coupling welded to the ends of a section of drill pipe, providing a high-strength, wear-resistant connection for joining individual pipe segments into a drill string. It consists of a male connection (the pin) on one end of the pipe and a female connection (the box) on the other. The tool joint's outer diameter is larger than the pipe body, so it sustains most of the abrasive wear against the casing and borehole wall.
