Swivel

A mechanical device on a drilling rig that hangs from the hook and traveling block, supporting the weight of the drill string while allowing it to rotate. It has a stationary upper section connected to the mud hose and a rotating lower section connected to the kelly. Modern top drive systems have replaced the kelly, rotary table, and swivel on most large rigs.
