Rathole
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003051
A hole in the rig floor beside the rotary table, lined with casing and roughly 30 to 35 feet deep, into which the kelly and swivel are set back when pipe is being tripped. Setting them in the rathole clears the work area above the rotary table. A top drive is not stored this way because it stays in the derrick, and a separate shorter mousehole holds the next single joint of pipe to be added.
