Breakout
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000450
The failure of the wellbore wall in the form of spalling or fracturing, often occurring in pairs on opposite sides of the hole. This phenomenon is caused by compressive stress concentrations around the wellbore, leading to rock failure. Breakouts can indicate the orientation of the maximum horizontal stress in the subsurface.
