Elastic limit

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004309

The maximum stress or force per unit area that a rock or other solid material can withstand without undergoing permanent deformation. When stress is applied below this limit, the material deforms elastically and returns to its original shape once the stress is removed. Exceeding the elastic limit results in plastic deformation or brittle failure, and its value for a given rock is determined through laboratory triaxial compression tests.
