Twist off

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003956

  1. A mechanical failure of the drill string where a section of pipe or a tool joint breaks due to excessive torque, fatigue, or material defects. This results in the lower portion of the drill string becoming detached and lost in the wellbore. It is a serious drilling problem that requires fishing operations to retrieve the lost equipment.

  2. The catastrophic failure of a drill string component, such as drill pipe or a tool joint, caused by torsional stress exceeding its yield strength. This event results in the separation of the drill string, leaving part of it in the wellbore. It necessitates costly and time-consuming fishing operations to recover the lost equipment.
