Mudding off

The process where drilling fluid solids, particularly fine particles, plug or seal off permeable zones in the wellbore, reducing fluid loss into the formation. This can be a desired effect to prevent lost circulation or an undesired effect if it causes formation damage. It is related to the formation of a mudcake.
