To prepare and mix drilling fluid to the required specifications for a particular section of a well. This process involves adding water, bentonite, barite, and other chemical additives to achieve the desired density, viscosity, and fluid loss properties. Mudding up occurs before drilling into new formations or when changing drilling fluid types.
