Pack off

To seal or isolate an annular space in a wellbore using a packing element, often to prevent fluid movement or to divert flow. This action is performed by tools such as packers or by the accumulation of drill cuttings around the drill string. Packing off can also refer to an undesirable condition where cuttings restrict circulation.
