Gravel-pack gun

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001731

A perforating gun loaded with big-hole charges, usually at a high shot density such as 12 shots per foot, to make large entrance holes through the casing and cement ahead of gravel packing. The large holes let gravel slurry flow into the tunnels and pack them, which limits sand production once the screen is in place. Big-hole charges trade some penetration for hole size, since gravel placement depends more on the hole at the casing than on tunnel length.
